Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter's resignation in January 2020 left California's San Diego-based 50th District open for the first time in 12 years.

One of the few Republican-held seats in Southern California to have not been flipped in 2018's blue wave, Hunter's slim margin made the 50th District a prime target for Democrats.

Former Congressman Darrell Issa, who had represented the neighboring 49th District for 18 years, entered the open primary.
